Where is Havelock Island?

One of the largest islands of Ritchie’s Archipelago, Havelock Island (Swaraj Dweep) is located around 22 nautical miles from the capital city of Port Blair. Previously named after Sir Henry Havelock, a British general of erstwhile colonial India, this Island was renamed by the Honourable Prime Minister of India Shri Narendra Modi, to Swaraj Dweep on 30th December 2018 as a tribute to Subhas Chandra Bose, who had hoisted the Indian flag on December 30, 1943, signifying liberation of Andaman and Nicobar Islands from the British rule. The island’s pristine coral-white beaches, lush green tropical forests, and vibrant marine life make it the ideal destination for solo travelers seeking a mix of adventure and escapade from the din of everyday life.

What is the best time to visit Havelock Island (Swaraj Dweep)?

The best months to visit this island would be during the autumn and winter months ranging from October to February. Since this is the peak season expect a little crowd. But as the weather is mild with a little nip in the air, exploring the island becomes a lot more comfortable. Avoid the island, especially during the monsoon and summer months from April to August as weather conditions are inclement and can change rapidly.

Exploring Options: What to do in Havelock Island (Swaraj Dweep)

Once you land on the island from Port Blair, make sure to grab a quick lunch from the restaurants near the dock. You will find a lot of hotels offering exotic seafood at a very reasonable price. Post lunch, walk over to one of the many rental shops that throng the jetty neighborhood and book a two-wheeler. You will have multiple options to choose from. A little bargain and you will end up with the best deal. Two-wheelers are probably the best way around the island if you are traveling solo.

Radhanagar Beach:

Take a ride through the countryside roads and lush green landscape to the accommodation that you would have booked in advance. You should book one near Radhanagar beach as this would be convenient to explore the island efficiently. You can spend the afternoon either in your resort or freshen up and move over to Radhanagar Beach.

Once you reach Radhanagar a spectacular sight awaits to mesmerize you. The white coral beaches and the turquoise blue waters are a sight for sore eyes. The beach has been ranked the 7th most beautiful beaches in Asia and it truly has its worth in gold. Walk along the water and explore the beach. If you are lucky, you will be able to spot an array of marine life right near the shore. The rocky beach at the far North of the beach is the best place to explore marine flora and fauna. Make sure to take a trek through the forest that surrounds the beach to reach a Shiva Temple within the wilderness. The serenity and tranquillity that the ambiance offers are absolutely worth it.

For water activities, you should try snorkeling, scuba diving, and underwater sea walks. Activities range from underwater sea walks, scuba diving, Jet Skiing, and glass-bottom boat rides to banana rides. The rich marine wildlife makes Scuba Diving a major sought-after activity by tourists in Havelock Island. The turquoise crystal waters offer the perfect peek into the underwater world.

You can try a multitude of seafood options offered by locals near the beach. Fishes are a delicacy one must not miss on this island. Rehydrate yourself with natural electrolyte-filled coconut water which is also found in abundance across the island. Make sure not to miss the sunset on this beach.

Trekking to Elephant Beach:

If lush green landscapes, dense tropical forest canopy, and an assortment of unique flora and fauna excite you, a trek to the Elephant Beach is a must. This is a moderately easy trek of around 2.5 km that takes almost an hour or less to complete depending on your physical capacity. But I would advise not to rush it because the journey is as beautiful as the destination.

I started around 8:00 am in the morning after a quick breakfast at the resort. Make sure to pack an ample amount of water for rehydration. Carrying a snack or two if necessary is also advisable. The trek takes you through a dense forest landscape. It is the perfect place to capture the magnificent beauty of untamed raw nature. The tall green tropical canopy coupled with the woody effervescence of the damp forest floor provides the perfect mood to explore the unexplored. As you trek you will come across multiple trees and shrubs with tags on them helping you better identify the rich ecological diversity of the island. You will also find multiple insects and flora as you explore the forest floor. More excitement awaits you as you move forward with the trek. As you near the Elephant beach, you will be greeted with vast mangrove forests and dense marshland. Be extremely careful as you traverse them across them. A slight misstep can land you in neck-deep marshland, exiting which can be quite a challenge. Make sure to wear proper boots for this trek as there will be many damp and wet patches as well as patches that need skillful coordination.

Once you reach the beach enjoy a sip of refreshing coconut water to recharge yourself with the activities that lie ahead. The dense underwater marine and coral life make Elephant Beach the ideal place for snorkeling. Grab a pair of goggles and dive into the crystal-clear waters for a view of your lifetime. Post the water adventure simply sit back on the beach and enjoy the incredible view with scrumptious snacks. After a long day of adventure, you can either avail a speed boat ride back to your resort or you can trek back. You can easily return to Radhanagar Beach before sunset and enjoy the mesmerizing sunset from here.

Seafood would probably be the best go-to option on this island. From mouthwatering grilled fish delicacies to an assortment of crabs and prawns, you would be spoilt for choice. The island also offers a variety of street food and cuisine options from North or South India. If you are a vegetarian do not worry! You will find a lot of hotels offering vegetarian delicacies in and around the beaches. Packing Essentials: What to carry to Havelock Island (Swaraj Dweep)?

If you are traveling solo make sure to travel light preferably only a backpack, especially since you would opt to move around the island on a two-wheeler. Carrying an exceptional assortment of luggage would serve no purpose on the island because most of the time you would either be in the water or trekking through the jungle. Load your backpack with the bare essentials a mission-critical alternative for emergencies. Make sure you pack the following before you embark on your escapade:

1.      Sunscreen: The tropical sun in Havelock can be intense. Pack a high-SPF sunscreen to protect your skin from harmful UV rays, and don't forget lip balm with SPF.

2.      Insect Repellent: Mosquitoes and other insects can be a nuisance, especially during the evening. Bring a good quality insect repellent to keep those pesky bugs at bay.

3.      First-Aid Kit: A basic first-aid kit should include bandages, antiseptic wipes, pain relievers, and any personal medications you may need. It's always better to be prepared for minor injuries or illnesses.

4.      Reusable Water Bottle: Staying hydrated is crucial in the tropical climate. Make sure you carry a reusable water bottle and refill it periodically.

5.      Swimsuit: Since water activities are a highlight of Havelock Island, don't forget to carry your swimsuit. If you have your own snorkel mask and fins, it's a good idea to bring them for a more comfortable snorkeling experience you can always rent them.

6.      Waterproof Bag or Dry Bag: Protect your valuables, such as your phone, camera, and documents, by using a waterproof bag or dry bag when you're near water or participating in water sports.

7.      Comfortable Footwear: Comfortable walking shoes or sandals are a must. If you plan on hiking, consider bringing hiking shoes or sturdy sandals with good traction.

8.      Rain Gear: Since the weather in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands can be unpredictable, packing a lightweight rain jacket or poncho is a good idea, even during the dry season.

9.      Electrical Adapters and Power Banks: Ensure you have the right electrical adapters to charge your devices. Power outages can occur, so having a power bank can be a lifesaver, especially for keeping your phone charged.

10    Travel Towel: A compact, quick-drying travel towel is handy for beach trips, drying off after water activities, or even as an extra layer on cool evenings.

11    Backpack or Daypack: A small backpack or daypack is great for carrying your essentials when exploring the island. It's also convenient for carrying water, snacks, and your camera.

12    Travel Insurance: While not a physical item, travel insurance is essential for peace of mind. It can cover unexpected events such as trip cancellations, medical emergencies, or lost luggage.

13    Local SIM Card: Consider purchasing a local SIM card upon arrival to have access to mobile data and stay connected while exploring the island.

Remember that the key to packing for Havelock Island is to keep it lightweight and practical. The island has a relaxed atmosphere, so there's no need for formal clothing or excessive luggage. Prioritize items that will help you stay comfortable, safe, and ready for adventure.

Embarking on a solo adventure to Havelock Island is not just about discovering a beautiful destination; it's about discovering yourself.
